Linnaeus, 1767
A very soft test in combination with strong, external longitudinal muscle bands that extend the whole length of the organisms, make Ciona particularly contractile. There is also an inner layer of fine circular muscles. The branchial aperture is usually 8-lobed and the atrial aperture 6-lobed, both with single, probably light sensitive, ocelli between the lobes.
