Mostly "social" living ascidians. Colonies of very variable form. Zooids more or less free, or embedded in a common matrix, with 3 to many rows of gill slits. Atrial siphons independent or opening into a common cloaca. Body divided into thorax and abdomen. No true post-abdomen. Gonad in abdomen within loop of the intestine.
